Leading your own classes and workshops

Live class led by Michael Metts

Have you ever wanted to teach other people new skills or ideas, but don’t know where to start? Are you responsible for training co-workers? Thinking about teaching a course of your own?

This workshop will show you how to go from an idea you’re passionate about, to an engaging learning experience your students will enjoy.

A class participant writes in a workbook during an in-person class.

This class will show you how to:

  • Define learning objectives, then design a class or workshop experience that fits them

  • Choose the right format for your material, whether it’s online or in-person, asynchronous or live

  • Create custom-made activities that help your learners practice the concepts you’re teaching

  • Manage your time effectively, balancing teaching, activities, and discussion

  • Evaluate your classes, improving them based on feedback from attendees

What’s included:

  • 5 hours of training, activities, and discussion, with breaks throughout

  • 4 activity templates (as PDFs and Miro files) for you to use and adapt in your own work

  • Recordings of the talk portions

How it works

We’ll have a mix of teaching, hands-on activities, and discussion. We'll have several short breaks (5-10 mins) throughout the day and one longer break (20-30 mins) about halfway through.

Each workshop is limited to 24 attendees to make sure small group activities and discussions are valuable for everyone. There will also be a second facilitator helping the instructor with logistics, activities, and any support you may need.

Technology and tools we’ll use

We’ll use a few different tools to create an interactive, hands-on learning environment. A computer that you can install Slack and Zoom on should be all you need to participate.

  • A Zoom call with breakout rooms. We’ll use a main room for lectures and discussions, and smaller breakout rooms for hands-on activities. Video is welcome, but not required. Participate however you’re comfortable.

  • Miro for activities. This virtual whiteboard will be where we practice the different methods we’re teaching. We’ll share the Miro board templates with you after the class so you can adapt them to your own work.

  • Slack for communication. We’ll use Slack to keep everyone apprised of what’s happening during the workshop, and as a way to share resources and links.

Equity pricing

We offer 6 equity tickets to each class that are dramatically reduced in price. These are intended to help people who are unemployed, underrepresented, or experiencing other types of inequity.

This is all on the honor system. Please don’t buy one if this doesn’t describe you. Especially don’t buy one if your company is paying for the class.

Refunds and transfers

Due to the time-sensitive nature of live workshops, we can’t offer refunds. However, if you’re not able to attend and want to transfer your ticket to someone else, just let us know.

Code of conduct

This workshop is provided by Metts Strategy LLC, the business behind Leading Like You. We’re dedicated to providing a harassment-free experience for everyone. We do not tolerate harassment of participants in any form. All attendees must adhere to the Metts Strategy Code of Conduct.

Certificates of completion

If you or your employer would like me to send a certificate saying you’ve completed the workshop giving an overview of what you learned, we’re happy to do so. Just let us know.
